Today’s Special – Fresh AI Workslop

AI is creating a new workplace problem that looks productive on the surface but can create more work underneath: AI workslop. Workslop is content that looks polished, professional, and complete, yet lacks the substance, originality, or accuracy needed to actually move a project forward. The problem is that AI-generated emails, reports, presentations, marketing copy, and business documents can be produced in minutes—but when the content misses the mark, employees are left doing the rewrites, fact-checking, editing, and correcting. Instead of eliminating work, poorly implemented AI can simply shift the work from creating content to fixing content.

That problem is also creating anxiety around job security. About one in five workers say AI makes them feel less secure in their jobs, and that insecurity can affect how people approach their work and their careers. Some employees may cling more tightly to jobs they fear could disappear, while others may become so discouraged or anxious that they consider leaving the workforce altogether. Coworkers can also become suspicious of one another: “Is that really what you think, or is that what AI wrote for you?” When employees no longer know whether a colleague’s ideas are genuinely theirs, trust and collaboration can suffer. Overreliance on AI can also hamper creativity by encouraging workers to accept the first polished answer rather than developing original ideas.

Research is beginning to show that the way leaders use AI matters just as much as the technology itself. According to research from BetterUp Labs and Stanford Social Media Lab researchers, when leaders use AI for what should be enlightening or meaningful discussions, employees’ desire to quit increased by 29%, burnout increased by 26%, and coordination decreased by 12%. That raises an important question for businesses: Are we using AI to make employees more capable, or are we using it in ways that make people feel less valued? AI can be extremely useful for routine tasks, research, organization, and automation, but replacing meaningful human interaction with AI can have unintended consequences for morale, creativity, and teamwork.

The same challenges are appearing in AI-to-AI business interactions. AI systems can work remarkably well when handling fast, predictable tasks such as data synchronization, customer-service handoffs, scheduling, and structured information exchange. However, things become much less reliable when AI systems have to negotiate, interpret ambiguous situations, or solve creative problems. Different systems can have different objectives, assumptions, and logic, while hallucinations can introduce information that sounds convincing but is simply wrong. There is also a longer-term concern surrounding AI-generated content itself. We have not run out of high-quality human content yet, but top-tier material—such as books, expert research, original journalism, and clean human-written code—is a finite resource. If future AI models are trained on increasing amounts of AI-generated material, researchers warn about the possibility of model collapse, where outputs become repetitive, less diverse, and potentially less accurate.

The answer isn’t to stop using AI. The real challenge is learning where AI creates value and where humans still need to be firmly in control. Businesses should use AI to accelerate routine work while keeping humans responsible for strategy, creativity, judgment, relationships, and final approval. AI-generated content should be treated as a starting point—not automatically as finished work. The companies that benefit most from AI may ultimately be those that understand the difference between automation and replacement. Great-looking content isn’t necessarily great content, and a faster workflow isn’t necessarily a better workflow if employees spend their time cleaning up AI workslop. The goal should be AI that makes people better at their jobs—not AI that simply creates more work for people to fix.
